Project CLEA -- CONTEMPORARY LABORATORY EXPERIENCES IN ASTRONOMY -- develops laboratory exercises that illustrate modern astronomical techniques using digital data and color images. They are suitable for high- school and college classes at all levels, but come with defaults set for use in introductory astronomy classes for non-science majors. Each CLEA laboratory exercise includes a dedicated computer program, a student manual, and a technical guide for the instructor. The technical guides describe file formats, user-settable options, and algorithms used in the programs. The most advanced CLEA labs run under the latest versions of Windows on PC's (see note below regarding Vista and Windows 7), or under Windows emulation on Macintosh computers.

NOTE: This website is designed primarily to distribute software to teachers and system adminstrators. It is not set up for on-line use of the exercises. If you are an individual using CLEA software in a class, you may find that downloading files and documentation is a bit involved and requires some sophistication in the use of computers. Consult your instructor if you are having difficulty downloading or installing, since he or she should be familiar with the particular circumstances of using CLEA software at your particular institution. However, for all users, general instructions on downloading and installing can be found on this website and in the CLEA technical manuals. Thanks for your interest in Project CLEA and we look forward to hearing from you with comments and suggestions!

  • Jupiter's Moons and the Speed of Light:  (Jan. 2009)  Roemer's classic determination of the speed of light using observations of the eclipses of Jupiter's moon Io. A new student manual and new features of the Jupiter's Moons software bring a 17th Century technique into the 21st Century.
  • HR Diagrams of Star Clusters: A new lab (Jan. 2008) involving the comparative analysis of Hertzsprung-Russell Diagrams of Open Clusters to deterimine distances and ages. Students can access photometric data on 16 clusters and have the option of doing their own photometry using a simulated telescope. This exercise marks the debut of the new VIREO (Virtual Educational Observatory).
  • Jupiter's Moonsthe latest version (2.00, Fall 2007) of our classic lab, now rewritten in 32 bit code, and now displaying a rotating Jupiter, moon shadows, and eclipses.
  • Dying Stars and the Birth of the Elements: (Spring 2006) X-ray spectroscopy using data from the XMM-Newton mission.
  • Transits of Venus and Mercury;  (Fall 2005) using real images from the GONG array.

Wedge Plot Wall Poster for the LSS Lab; an alternate to using the networked plotting software.

A NOTE ON DOWNLOADING UNDER WINDOWS XP PRO if you have updated to SERVICE PACK 2 (Sept, 2004)

Users using XP Pro, SR2 (SR2 has been recommended by Microsoft as a Critical Update), may have the default firewall turned on and that can block downloads.  One simple thing to check is to go to Start, Control Panel, Security Center, Click Windows Firewall.  Then on the Windows Firewall "General" tab, click the OFF button.  Then try the download again.   You may wish to turn the Windows Firewall back on afterwards for security.
