Under the Greenwood Tree

Hardy revived scenes from his unpublished first novel, The Poor Man and the Lady, for his second published work, Under the Greenwood Tree. The book was written rapidly in 1871 at Weymouth and Higher Bockhampton. Rejected by Macmillan & Co., the manuscript was given to William Tinsley, who had eagerly requested it. The first edition in two volumes appeared in June 1872 and was greeted warmly by the press. Despite favorable reviews, Under the Greenwood Tree's first edition sold poorly.
