Laboratory Notes

In order to gain the most from the laboratory experience, you must read the background information and techniques of the exercises to be done before coming to the lab. Not knowing what is expected is detrimental to you and those with whom you work. Unannounced quizzes may be given at the beginning of some labs. Data and conclusions for laboratory work done in pairs or groups can be shared. However, answers to questions entered into the lab manual are not the group's but your own. PLEASE THINK FOR YOURSELF!

As a part of the laboratory experience, you may be required to remove cultures from the incubator or observe results of inoculations made during the scheduled lab after one, two, or more days on your own schedule or in class. This is especially true for your unknowns. Please make every effort to do so during the day so that I may be available to answer questions or assist with problems.

Results and answers to assigned questions for all laboratory exercises will be due the day the results are collected. The reports will be removed from the lab book and submitted for grading. The morphological and general unknowns will involve more extensive reports, the nature of which will be discussed in class.

SAFETY is an important issue in microbiology. Please read and adhere to all safety procedures as given in the laboratory manual. No food or drink is permitted in the laboratory. Safety goggles and/or gloves will be required from time to time.

Review Papers
Each person will write two short reviews on a specific bacterial and viral disease. You are a medical or environmental expert with the CDC being sent into an area in which an outbreak of a particular bacterial (or viral) disease has occurred. This could be somewhere in the US or a third world country. Select an organism, explain how it is transmitted, methods to combat it, and a simple way to educate the population to minimize its occurrence. You need to document in either 1) memo, 2) letter, or 3) speech format your plans to reduce the incidence of the disease in your choosen country.

Supplemental Readings

I will make current articles and web site addresses available from time to time as we cover germane topics. Notice of most of these readings will be posted by e-mail or will appear in the course home page, bio230-spr-03.html.
