Course Description

Introduction to basic critical approaches to the reading of prose fiction, poetry, and drama.  Through the careful study of works in each genre students will acquire a knowledge of analytical skills and critical terminology in Spanish.

General Objective:

To develop reading comprehension, basic literary analysis skills, basic literary criticism vocabulary.

Specific Objectives:

  • 1 - To identify major and minor anecdotical facts (what?, who?, when?, where? etc.)
  • 2 - To use in context vocabulary, expressions and idioms from the readings
  • 3 - To paraphrase, retell and summarize events and descriptions
  • 4 - To identify and differentiate multiple levels of language usage (signifier and signified, literal and figurative, denotative and connotative, prosaic and poetic, metaphoric and symbolic)
  • 5 - To know literary terms
    •  a) to give textbook definition
    •  b) to identify examples in a literary selection
    •  c) to use the terms correctly in oral and written work
  • 6 - To infer historical and cultural references from literary texts
  • 7 - To interrelate events, characters and levels of language usage to historical and cultural references
  • 8 - To deduce major and minor themes.

Evaluation:

Evaluation: Observation during class discussions. Quizzes on specific points based on the literary works assigned; two written assignments, three tests, and a final exam. Final may include some short essay questions.

Note: There will be no "make-up" tests (exams) or quizzes. If you miss a quiz or a test you forfeit its corresponding points.  The Final examination will be given only at the time and place specified in the schedule. Make ALL your travel plans accordingly.

Examen final: viernes, 15 de diciembre, 8:30pm - 11:30pm.
