Research 2006

Jenna Deavon worked with Dr. Stephenson in this collaboration: "Overall, the project was designed to determine the areal density (the burn efficiency) of ICF (Inertial Confinement Fusion) capsules through the use of a Carbon diagnostic system.  At Gettysburg, we used the MCNPX particle transport code to simulate the various reactions which occur both in the diagnostic and in the NaI(Tl) detectors."

Three students, Marcelo Cardozo, Sam Casacio, and Daiji Kawamura, did a great job working with Dr. Pella in the physics general lab on much-needed updates and clarification of experiments and instructions in Physics Department lab books used for first year labs.

The Department's Project CLEA sponsored a summer workshop, and two physics majors, Billy Brehm and Anne Emerson, helped organize and run it under the direction of Project Manager Dick Cooper and Principal Investigator Larry Marschall. One of these students, Billy, continued to work this summer, under Dr. Marschall's direction, on Observatory projects.

Four Gettysburg College physics majors, Jenna Deaven, Anne Emerson, Jamie Leiter and Kristen Toskes, worked with Dr. Stephenson during the summer months to model nuclear reactions and determine efficiency in collaboration with faculty and students at SUNY Geneseo, and scientists at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE). A fifth Gettysburg student, Maria Barrios, worked on site for the summer on the same project. (more...)

In July, these students visited SUNY Geneseo to tour its facilities and presented posters; in September, they traveled to Maui, Hawaii, for the joint APS/JPS Division of Nuclear Physics conference, where they presented two posters, and attended lectures given by world renowned physicists.

This past October, Dr. Stephenson and senior Maria Barrios traveled to Denver, Colorado, for the Division of Plasma Physics meeting with colleagues from SUNY Geneseo, and successfully presented three posters.

Under the guidance of Dr. Crawford, three other Gettysburg physics majors, Zelalem Arega, Matthew Recore and Aaron Zovko  worked on the proton accelerator in Masters Hall; senior students were able to use it to complete their independent senior research projects.
