"I keep the subject constantly before me and
wait till the first dawnings open slowly, by little
and little, into a full and clear light." -Sir
Isaac Newton
Thank you for your interest in
Physics
at
Gettysburg College!
By exploring our web pages, we hope you will obtain
a clear, comprehensive picture of what makes Gettysburg
College outstanding among college physics programs
in helping you to assume responsibility for and control
over your education, and ultimately your life's work.
We hope to help you make an informed choice of a
major - and that it will be physics!
Physics explores the
fundamental laws of the universe, the structure of matter
and energy, and the forces by which all objects interact.
Today's world is complex
and often confounding, but physics
graduates are well prepared to enter this world because they
have begun to appreciate, through careful observation and
critical thinking, the way things work, and how to convey,
through clear, concise oral and written communication, its
practical application to product development, process
control and instrumentation. Products and technology change
constantly, but physical principles do not.
And, as said before, experience really is the best teacher*, so the Physics
Department provides the necessary laboratories to explore
the design of experiments, analyze data, sharpen skills, and often to "just
tinker."
