Quantitative Assessment of Students' Library Skills and Attitudes

4. Results - Attitude Measures

Students were presented with a number of statements designed to elicit their attitudes about the library, the librarians, and their own library research skills. They responded to each statement on a 5-point scale ranging from "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree." For some items, "strongly agree" indicates a positive attitude about the library; for other items, "strongly disagree" indicates a positive attitude about the library. These items were combined (using reverse-coding as necessary) to create 3 summary measures (see How Attitude Measures Were Calculated for more information):

  1. The first summary measure combined almost all attitude items and resulted in an overall attitude measure.
  2. The second summary measure combined only those items pertaining specifically to attitudes about librarians.
  3. The third summary measure combined only those items pertaining specifically to students' perception of their own library research skills.

For the purpose of analysis, the BI group and the RPC group were further divided into subgroups:

Raw data: response ranges, pre-test mean scores, and post-test mean scores for all items
