The staff of the Gettysburg College athletic training room consists of two full-time certified athletic trainers (A.T.C.), along with a part-time certified athletic trainer. The certified athletic trainers are assisted by approximately 25 student athletic trainers, and work under the auspices of the National Athletic Trainer's Association ( NATA ) and the Pennsylvania Athletic Training Society ( PATS. ) The program is also assisted by physician Samuel D'Agata, M.D., who serves as team Orthopedic Consultant for Gettysburg College. The athletic training program also works in conjunction with team physicians Dr. Michael McGlaughlin, Dr. Dwight Michaels, Dr. Adam Wasserman, and Dr. Paul Zeshonsky.
The athletic training room at Gettysburg College provides care for injured Gettysburg College athletes. The athletic trainers are on duty for three seasons a year (Fall, Winter, Spring), and work during preseason conditioning camps in the summer. The athletic trainers evaluate injuries incurred by athletes during both practices and games. Treatment through therapeutic modalities is administered in the athletic training room by the certified staff.
The student athletic trainers involved in the program play an integral part in the training room activities. Students play an active role as interns in the training room, assisting in on-field supervision, first-aid, evaluation of injuries, and follow-up care of those injuries. Upperclassmen are given the responsibility of serving as student athletic trainer for individual sports throughout the different seasons. The student athletic trainer attends all practices and assists the certified athletic trainers on the field during athletic events at the College. The student will also travel to all away events with their teams.
In the future, the Gettysburg College athletic training program hopes to become an accreditied CAAHEP program. Students presently majoring in HES can qualify for an intership at NATA to become a Certified Athletic Trainer. When accreditation is granted, new requirements may be implemented under the HES major.
