Using New Technologies when Interviewing

Students in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology are encouraged to use some of our new technologies when you are conducting interviews for research projects. We have at your disposal the following:

Mini-disc recorders: These tiny recorders enable you to record 2 ½ hours of uninterrupted interviews that are crystal-clear. INSTRUCTIONS

Cool-Edit: This program is found on all co-lab computers. It enables you to transfer your mini-disc recording onto your computer in the form of a wave file. Once in wave format, you can use the Transcriber program (see below). INSTRUCTIONS

Transcriber: This program is found on all co-lab computers. It enables you to transcribe your interview and easily move backwards and forwards through your sound file. Transcriber allows you to create a text file (typed up summary or direct transcription) that is directly linked to your sound file. INSTRUCTIONS
