Math 112 Homework
HW 0 - due Wed 8/31:
- Write a few paragraphs telling me about yourself. I am especially interested in your mathematical background, your goals for this course and at Gettysburg in general, and anything else you want to tell me.
HW 1 - due Wed 9/7:
- Read: 8.1-8.3
- Do: 8.1: 10, 14, 18, 40. 8.2: 4, 16, 17, 28, 32, 35, 50
- Challenge Problem: 8.1: 50 (Recall that Challenge Problems are not required, but are a good way to earn A La Carte points. If you choose to do this problem, you should turn it in separately but on the same day.)
HW 2 - due Wed 9/14:
- Read: 8.1-8.3
- Do: 8.2: 54, 56. 8.3: 5, 8, 10, 14, 18, 22, 24, 35.
- Challenge Problem: Here (Recall that Challenge Problems are not required, but are a good way to earn A La Carte points. If you choose to do this problem, you should turn it in separately but on the same day.)
HW 3 - due Wed 9/21:
- Read: 8.4-8.5
- Do: 8.4: 2, 6, 11, 20, 23, 29, 32. 8.5: 4, 8, 13, 21.
- Challenge Problem: You can still do last week's. Here's a new one. (Recall that Challenge Problems are not required, but are a good way to earn A La Carte points. If you choose to do this problem, you should turn it in separately but on the same day.)
HW 4 - 'due' Fri 9/30:
- You must spend at least 15 minutes seriously thinking about the Problems of the Month, as distributed in class and also found throughout Glatfelter's 2nd floor (on green paper)
- This would also be a good week to think about ala carte points. I'll even extend the deadline on the last two Challenge Problems to this Friday.
HW 5 - due Fri 10/7:
- Read: 8.6-8.8
- Do: 8.6: 6, 8, 11, 12, 36. 8.7: 4, 6, 9, 12, 29.
HW 6 - due Fri 10/14:
- Read: 8.8-8.9
- Do: 8.8: 2, 5, 10, 16. 8.9: 11, 15, 18, 24, 29, 30.
- Challenge: Find the Maclauin series of the function f(x)=x/(1-x-x^2). The coefficients should form a familiar pattern. Can you prove this?
HW 7 - due Fri 10/28:
- You must spend at least 15 minutes seriously thinking about the Problems of the Month, as distributed in class and also found throughout Glatfelter's 2nd floor (on red paper)
- This would also be a good week to think about ala carte points.
- Do: 5.6: 2, 3, 4, 9, 12, 18, 34.
- Challenge: 5.6: 36, 46
HW 8 - due Fri 11/4
- Read: 7.1-7.3
- Do: 7.1: 1, 4, 7, 9, 13, 14. 7.3: 1, 2, 5, 10, 14, 29, 31, 34.
- Challenge: What goes up must come down
HW 9 - due Fri 11/11
HW 10 - due Fri 12/2
- Read: 6.2-6.3
- Do:6.2: 21, 22, 23, 24, 35. 6.3: 4, 16, 21, 22, 23, 26
- Challenge: Arc Length Contest as described on p. 472 -- Can you find a function which is always positive and with f(0)=f(1)=1 with area 1? The smallest arc length gets BONUS Bonus points.
