There are beautiful and copious plates at the end of the book, many of which are pictures of the artifacts gathered from the famous Oseberg burial. Brent, Peter. The Viking Saga. G.P. Putnam and Sons: New York, 1975. (Subject - Viking history) --Of interest here are some very nice color and black and white prints, esp. a nice one of a battle mask and some ship burial photos. This book seems to visit the main points in Viking history and is well-written. The tone is almost conversational, and so makes for an easy read.

Cultural Atlas of the Viking World. ed. James Graham Campbell. (Subject - Vikings) --This book is a must-read! It explains Viking culture from pre-Viking Scandinavia to Viking-Age Scandinavia and its customs, lifestyles, literature, religion, and societal structure to Viking expansion overseas. It wraps up with a look back at the what the Vikings left behind when their age came to an end. In addition to all of that great information, the book is reader-friendly and offers spectacular maps and pictures.

Davidson, H.R. Ellis, The Viking Road to Byzantium.George Allen and Unwin Ltd.: London, 1976. (Subject - Vikings in the east, Byzantium) -- This book may be a little bit dated, but it is one of the only such resources in our own library. The author focuses on the Viking movement into eastern Europe. She covers most all areas, including trade, fighting, the Byzantium expereince, and the ideas that stemmed from the East. Seeems easy to read also.

Jesch, Judith, Women in the Viking Age. Boydell Press: Woodbridge, 1991. (Subject - Viking women) -- This book explores the roles of women in Viking society from domestic doings to appearances art, mythology, and poetry. The book is not a full historical account of the Viking age; it focuses mainly on women and offers a rarely-seen account of what their lives were like amidst their famed warrior fathers, brothers, and husbands. Very clear reading.

Jones, Gwyn, A History of the Vikings. 2nd ed., Oxford University Press: Oxford, 1985. (Subject - civilization, Scandinavian, Vikings) -- This book appears to give a fairly thorough history of the Viking world. Originally printed in the 60's, it may be a bit dated, but it is not a bad source. The reading, though a bit dry, is understandable. There are a few pages missing from the copy in our library, though.

Jones, Gwyn, The Norse Atlantic Saga. Oxford University Press: London, 1964. (Subject - discovery and exploration -- Iceland, Greenalnd, America -- Norse) -- This source is indeed dated, but still appears to be well-written and fairly comprehensve. The focus is that of the Norse exploration voyages to Iceland, Greenland, and North America. The first part of the book tells the story of these discoveries, and the second part tells of the sources from which these stories came.

Loyn, Henry, The Vikings in Britain. Blackwell Publishers: Malden, Mass., 1994. (Subject - Vikings, civilization) -- This book attempts to dispell the rumors that Vikings were nothing but a gang of horrible brutes that destroyed all in their paths. Loyn tells of how the Vikings actually left an important legacy on the society of Medieval Britain.

Randsborg, Klavs, The Viking Age in Denmark: the formation of a state. St. Martin's Press: New York, 1980. (Subject - Vikings, Denmark) -- This book focuses entirely on Denmark, and not all of the original Viking territory. This focus allows for great attention to things such as the runes at Jylland and the silver hoards (an entire chapter on hoards and economic surplus). There are also some great plates in this book.

Using photos of Viking age artifacts and sites contributed by museums and organizations from all over Europe, these editors beautifully piece together the story of Viking life. Sawyer, Birgit, and Peter, Medieval Scandinavia: from conversion to reformation, circa 800-1500. University of Minnesota Press: Minneapolis, 1993. (Subject: Scandinavian history) -- This appears to be quite a solid source on Medieval Scandinavia. The authors cover everything from climate, to politics, to women, to religious struggles. The writing is clear and reader-friendly.

Smyth, Alfred P., Scandinavian Kings in the British Isles 850-880. Oxford University Press: Oxford, 1977. (Subject - Scandinavians in Britian) -- Again, we have a dated source, but this one also looks to be worthwhile for exactly what its title indicates. The drawback to this source is that it is a bit on the dry side, though certainly not impossible to get through. You might want to keep a pen and paper near also, as there are many confusing names throughout the book.

Smyth, Alfred P., Scandinavian York and Dublin: the history and archaeology of two related Viking kingdoms. Irish Academic: Dublin, 1987. (Subject - Northmen -- England and Ireland, Vikings) -- The writing here again is not the most interesting, but it is understandable. What this book offers is a look the Scandinavian invasions of parts of England and Ireland and an insight into how the peoples of the two islands felt toward and reacted to the invasive Vikings. It is worth a look.

Vikings and the Byzantine World

Blondal, Sigfus, The Varangians of Byzantium. Cambridge University Press: Cambridge, 1978. (Subject - Vikings in Byzantium, military) -- Though this source is a little bit dated, it is definitely worth looking at. One of the only Viking/Byzantine books in our library, it offers an in-depth and understandable account of the military actions of the Vikings in Byzantuim during the 11th century.

Viking Runes

Blegen, Theodore C., The Kensington Rune Stone: new light on an old riddle. Minnesota Historical Society: St. Paul, Minnesota, 1968. -- This source is dated, but it is not attempting to give up-to-date information anyway. The focus of this book is that of examining the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the rune stone and the early debates over its authenticity. The time frame of the history contained in the book is limited to that of 1898 - 1915, allowing for an in-depth look at the beginnings of the controversy.

(Subject - Vikings, history and archaeology) -- This article gives a nice overview with some specifics on the Viking dig at York or "Jorvik." Norse Literature and Language

Frank, Roberta, "Viking Atrocity and Skaldic Verse: the rite of the blood-eagle." The English Historical Review, v. 99, Apr. 1984, p. 332-43. (Subject - Vikings, literature and history) -- This article presents the viewpoint that the Rite of the Blood Eagle could in fact be just the stuff of myths and legends, not an actual pat of history. Frank seems to assert that there is only vague evidence of such a ritual in Skaldic poetry and that those representations are up to interpretation. Some knowledge of Skaldic poetry would be useful in reading this.

Harris, Joseph, "Beowulf's Last Words." Speculum, v. 67, Jan 1992, p.1-32. (Subject - Beowulf) -- This article talks about Beowulf's death song in relation to the Norse death songs. It is dry and pretty much a sleeper. Only for those who are really interested in the topic.

(Subject - comparative literature, English and Old Norse) -- In an attempt to decipher the exact meaning of an excerpt from Solomon and Saturn I, the author cites various examples from Old Norse-Icelandic literature in reference to good and evil in literature. Not all that useful unless working specifically with this sort of topic.

Lerer, Seth, "Grendel's Glove." ELH, v. 61, Winter 1994, p. 721-51.
