Guidelines for Submissions Published quarterly, The Gettysburg Review considers unsolicited submissions of poetry, fiction, essays, and essay-reviews from September 1 through May 31 (postmark dates). New submissions received from June 1 through August 31 are returned unread. We welcome submissions of full-color graphics year round. The main criterion for selection is quality, but the best way to determine what might be accepted by The Gettysburg Review is to read what has already been published. Sample copies of the most recent issue are available at $7 each; one-year subscriptions (4 issues) are $24. We strongly encourage all potential contributors to read several issues before submitting. In the genre of poetry, both short and long poems are of interest, including longer narrative poems. Fiction is generally in the form of short stories, although lengthier pieces are sometimes accepted and serialized, and excerpts from novels have been published. Essays can be on virtually any subject, so long as it is treated in a literary fashiongracefully and in depth. The Gettysburg Review does not reprint previously published material. Poetry submissions should consist of one to five poems typed, either single- or double-spaced, on one side of the page. Prose manuscripts can be of just about any length but should be typed double-spaced on one side. Visual artists interested in having work considered should submit a selection of slides with a cover letter. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but please indicate in the cover letter that a manuscript is under concurrent consideration and notify us immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. Payment is upon publication: $2.50 per line for poetry and $30 per printed page for prose. Published authors also receive a copy of the issue containing their work and a one-year subscription. Address all submissions to Peter Stitt, Editor, The Gettysburg Review, Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, PA 17325-1491. The Gettysburg Review does not accept unsolicited submissions via fax or e-mail. No manuscript or artwork will be returned, nor any query answered, unless accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Expect three to six months for a decision. Please refrain from inquiring about a manuscripts status until at least five months have passed. We prefer that authors send us a note with an SASE rather than contact us via phone or e-mail; however, when using e-mail, send questions to the assistant editor. The Gettysburg Review accepts no responsibility for the damage or loss of unsolicited manuscripts. |
