Although both Cornhill and Macmillan's considered publishing
The Trumpet Major, it was finally serialized in Good Words
from January to December of 1880. A notebook of Hardy's in the Dorset County
Museum shows that he conducted careful research for the historical
background of the reign of George III. Although Hardy made some amendments
for the serial edition, he later restored the original content, which
included swear-words
and a Sunday rendezvous between lovers.
The
finished novel was published in three volumes by Smith, Elder in October,
1880.
