The Hand of Ethelberta
The Hand of Ethelberta, which for Hardy represented "'a plunge in a
new and untried direction'" (Purdy 22), was begun in Surbiton and London
in March of 1875 and serialized in Cornhill Magazine from July of
that year through May 1876. The success of Far from the Madding
Crowd had prompted Leslie Stephen to solicit the new novel from Hardy
for publication. The first two-volume edition from Smith, Elder & Co.
appeared in April 1876.
